Growing Up

"You've grown up!", I said. Seasons had changed, time had went by and I never even noticed you growing. You were just always that innocent looking being that once stood before me, completely unknown, a blank slate waiting to be written on.

I take a second to think about it and reflect on the blank slate I thought I had seen. How can someone even consider another person "empty" just because their mark is not there? How can we think of ourselves so highly to even consider that we are the ones that make such a difference?

You came with your writings as I came with mine and stupidly I just didn't care enough to flip through your pages and try to read more than the things I was interested in. A book constantly written and all I cared about was the childish drawings I made by its margins.

I shouldn't think of myself so highly when I don't even have a cover, I've resigned myself to being an assorted compilation of pages that though seemingly set in stone and not a bit more stable than a sandstorm.

Set in stone... Nothing's set in stone this days. Not the truth, not our thoughts not the future and not even the past, which is limited by what we personally wanted to see. You didn't see what that person, who was new to you, had gone through before you met him/her.

I didn't see how the things many people said had a different meaning other than the one I gave to those words. The meaning of the speaker, the only one who knows if what is said is meant and if it is the truth or not.
I didn't see the dreams behind the straight faces, the ideals being the suits and ties, the morals behind made-up speeches and needed debates. I didn't see that everytime you dreamt of a new thing and aspired for something bigger than yourself you grew taller, newer, better than what you already were. In all of this, I didn't even see myself throughout those years, worried about a constant evolution that was taking place, regardless of me noticing it or not.

I didn't really see the people that I, if even for a moment, thought I knew.

Did we grow up?
Or did we just simply get to know ourselves?
